A neighborhood walking tour led by artist Roshani Thakore during our KSMoCA Summer Camp (2018)
The map below is a curated selection of artworks in the neighborhood surrounding Dr. MLK Jr. School and KSMoCA. We are defining the term “neighborhood” loosely, not by official boundaries drawn by the city, but by a sense of geographical, historical, and contextual proximity to our school community.
We are also defining “public art” loosely. Although there are many murals along Alberta Street, we were particularly interested in showcasing projects that have some conceptual, relational, or historical connection to our school community. We’re also defining art as a creative act by a person or group of people, which had a lasting impact.
Public Art in Our Neighborhood was developed by students in our Winter 2021 PSU undergrad experiential learning class called, “KSMoCA: Museum in a School” (Art 328). The course was taught by Lisa Jarrett and Amanda Leigh Evans. The students who developed this project are: Andrea Hernandez, John Rau, Kimberley Vu, Maya Sutriasa, Nayomi Morita, Tenzin Tardiff, and Tony Kane. This map is an ongoing project that continues to grow.
