Postcards from America

May 2015

KSMoCA’s inaugural exhibit, Postcards from America, featured the work of internationally renowned photographers from Magnum Photo Agency. This permanent reinstallation of images originally curated by Dr MLK Jr School students features photographs of American cities—from Rochester, New York to Redlands, California—by Paolo Pellegrin, Jim Goldberg, Susan Meiselas, Alec Soth and Mikhael Subotzky, among others.

Leading up to the original exhibition, a group of Magnum photographers documented various aspects of Portland with the support of students from PSU’s MFA in Art + Social Practice Program. Alec Soth documented aspects of Dr MLK Jr School while he was in Portland. Gemma-Rose Turnbull and Emily Fitzgerald coordinated the partnership between Magnum Photo Agency, KSMoCA, and PSU’s MFA in Art + Social Practice.

To select photos for KSMoCA’s inaugural exhibition, students from Dr. MLK Jr. School gathered in the school library to review and vote on images. The student curatorial process was designed and organized by Gemma-Rose Turnbull and Emily Fitzgerald, and the curatorial workshop was facilitated by Alec Soth.

This work is now installed as part of KSMoCA’s Permanent Collection. You can view it here.
