notMOMA is a collaborative art project between Stephanie Syjuco, Ms. Ellis’s 3rd grade class and Ms. Asay’s 6th grade class at King School in NE Portland, OR and Portland State University (PSU) Art and Social Practice students.
PSU and King students explored the online collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and decided to curate artworks for re-creation around the theme Shared Space. Working in small groups the third graders followed Syjuco’s written instruction to decide which works they wanted to make and shared their thoughts on why these works appealed to them. The sixth graders learned to work as docents for the opening reception. Collectively, the students acted as artists, curators, and docents to present notMoMA: Shared Space. The exhibition includes works in a variety of media for KSMoCA, King school’s contemporary art museum.
