The MLK Jr. School Music Project was founded in 2018 by PSU music faculty Darrell Grant and Suzanne Savaria. The project develops creative, culturally-based music education activities at Dr. MLK Jr. School and is integrated into the school’s curriculum as part of PSU's Artist as Citizen Initiative.
In the Fall of 2019, the project developed Rap at Lunch, a program inspired by a group of students in Ms. Johnson’s 5th grade class—Azariah, Cash, and Marvin—who formed their own rap group called The Wild Cats. These young musicians have been working with PSU students to further develop their music through practice sessions, school performances, and time spent in a studio to record some of their work.
